Public sculpture, public work, and working in public… each is a little different. As a professional sculptor, ownership of the work is very important. Public work is generally intended to last for generations, and is generally rather well maintained. Still, since Public means exactly that, that the work has to be capable of surviving the pressure being in a public place brings for many years, decades usually. This means that some materials are more suitable than others. Stone and bronze have proven themselves over thousands of years to survive the demands of public presentation. The elemental nature of of stone and bronze bring a historical credibility that can’t be denied or ignored. Both media present the hand of the sculptor in an absolutely unique way, in a manner that reinforces our shared humanity. It is always an honor to know that my work is owned by a community… by several communities.
