My neck was badly broken in the fall of 2008, and it was a slow recovery. Along the way, while I wasn’t strong enough to carve, I continued a series of peices constructed of found and created objects. This piece was one of the best, and the most directly related to the accident. Catharsis can be a powerful motivator.

This detail shows the large glass chunks embedded in the glitter-filled resin and the radiator hose that covers the welded chain that forms the support of the “neck”. The red “wings” are acrylic paint over wax paper. They have lasted outdoors since then, and are flying strong today.

The granite bowl I had carved as a present nearly twentty years ago. I had converted it into a bonsai pot when it proved impractical as a fruit bowl for the table, due to its weight. It hung out for years before it found its final home in this piece.
