Often I will spend a weekend with the kids, or a friend, or alone, and just have fun being creative in the studio. In these experimental sessions I am trying to be open to new ways of creating, new ways of valuing materials that otherwise have no apparent value.

Sometimes the pieces I cut off my architectural or sculptural commissions are interesting shapes in their own right, and I try to see for what they are, rather than as scraps or left overs.

These pieces made this way are like reminders of a the passage of a series. I’ve found that the very quick sketch-like pieces often signal a change of direction.
