There are fossils in this stone that are much harder than the sedimentary stone they are surrounded by, so it is possible to get a very rich and varied texture with the chisels. The brick hearth is original to the 1920’s home. Someone in the past had replaced the original surround with a very ugly one, and when the new owners began the restoration of the home, the old fireplace was one of the first things they got rid of.

The lunettes feature dragon/birds plucking at grape vines. Although this photo is abysmal, it does show to a degree the texture of the finish.

I have always been fond of the Tudor style, and of channeled moldings in particular. The well-worn firebox really helps the piece look comfortably at home.

The scale of Tudor work is best in an intimate room. This shot really shows how a personal scale works to the room’s advantage.

This one has it all right for Tudor; scale, material, texture, color tone. I’d have one in my house, if I had a 1920’s big old house.
