The front doors of a winery in Napa, designed by me and fabricated by Metaldelphia.
The doors are 11 feet tall and weigh 667 pounds each.
Blued and Painted steel
11' x 9'-6"
These large doors are now in Napa, California, gracing the front door of a new winery/residence. The jamb is of 10" x 1/2" steel, beat with a 1920's 20,000 pound trip hammer, restored just for the occasion. The trip hammer beats continuously; it took four of us to hold the steel in the jaws of the hammer, and if we deviated from flat the resulting blow nearly tore our arms off. It was three days of hell beating that jamb, but the resulting texture is amazing (and amazingly hard to capture on film). The hinge pins were milled to a tolerance of 4/1000ths of an inch so that they'll last and not rattle in the wind.
Old World enjoys a challenge such as this, and the result shows that we can and will deliver even the tricky stuff in such a way that things fit the way they're supposed to.
Special thanks to Chris of Metaldelphia - nice job, Chris. You too, Mark.
