Detail 9
Butler Sandstone
2'-8" x 1'-6" x 11" (this piece)
Carving sandstone is a miserable experience. It dulls the chisels in no time, the large grain structure makes detail difficult, it has soft spots and hard patches, the dust in your eyes and clothes is scratchy and unavoidable, and any mistakes are obvious. Even so, the beauty of the finished product is unobtainable with any other material. Be forewarned--sandstone carvings are considerably more expensive than limestone.
