Creekside Mosaic

?” glass tiles, masonry substrate, fiber optic lights, stainless steel,
water 48’ x 4’.

Each of these 40,000 tiles was placed by hand, as closely together as possible. Since the substrate is three-dimensional, this meant that none of the joint lines line up over the entire mosaic. We had a blast making this, although it was slow and the bending over was back breaking. Other subs on the site were interesting; almost all of them liked it, but even the bricklayers were amazed by the apparent repetitiveness of the work. But hanging out on a beautiful day with my friends, my coworkers, and on several days, my kids making art… what’s not to like?

Intended to remain actively reflective even dry, the masonry substrate holds each tile at a different angle to any given light source. It also manages to throw the reflections off the flowing water around deliciously randomly. The substrate’s composition was inspired by lettering, and the pattern of the colors of the glass operate independently from the substrate.

We are proud of our involvement with the project, and pleased that the community has embraced our efforts.
